Morabito & Edelmann at Gallery 195
Maria Morabito
Maria Morabito
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents an exhibition of works by Maria Morabito and Lambert Edelmann at Gallery 195 at First Niagara Bank, 195 Church St., 4th floor, New Haven. The exhibition will be on display during bank hours through September 14, 2012 (Mon.-Wed. 9-4, Thurs & Fri. 9-5). An artists’ reception is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Morabito finds inspiration in biochemical processes in the brain, as well as the history of written documentation. Edelmann studies the struggle between building and decay, destruction to seek control, domination of nature by civilizations, and domination of cultures by other cultures.

For more information about this exhibition and Gallery 195 at First Niagara Bank, call the Arts Council at (203) 772-2788.

With this exhibition, Creative Arts Workshop showcases the breadth of our students’ creative expression, from the earliest material explorations of young artists to the skillful application of technique by those who have practiced for years. The Student Show also serves as inspiration for visitors to explore their own curiosities about creative processes, demonstrating the extensive range of artistic disciplines offered in classes at CAW.

Each year, CAW offers over 300 classes and workshops taught by more than 50 professional artists. Areas of study include book arts, design, drawing, fiber, jewelry, painting, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and a young people’s program.

During the opening reception of the Student Show on Sunday, July 8, Creative Arts Workshop also hosts its annual tag sale. All proceeds go to the CAW Tuition Assistance Program, helping to make art classes available to everyone. To donate items for the tag sale, please call 203.562.4927.

A critic at my house sees some paintings. Greatly perturbed, he asks for my drawings. My drawings! Never! They are my letters, my secrets. - Paul Gauguin

The New Haven Free Public Library Gallery
133 Elm Street (Lower Level) New Haven, CT
Artist Reception: Saturday, July 7, 2 to 4:30 PM
Artist website: http://mdkpainting.mosaicglobe.com/

"My inspiration" says artist Michael Kozlowski, "has always come from painters who have the ability to create and display another world that not only allows you to visit but draws you in and bars the door behind you. Whether this is done through the intrigue created by the symbolism and careful technique of Edward Hopper, or through the visual attack that comes from many paintings by Turner, creating work that has this type of arresting power and presence is my goal."

Many of his recent paintings have been large scale, immersive works depicting store windows and interior spaces executed in varying styles to evoke different feelings and emotions. These works are left intentionally oblique so that, rather than dictate a particular meaning or point of view, they can be the catalyst for a dialogue with the work. Michael continues to push his art in new directions, recently experimenting with portraiture and mixed media.

Exhibition: June 28 - August 1, 2012

JULY 10 *Con Fidel Pase Lo Que Pase (With Fidel, come what may) documentary | Serbia & Cuba | 2011 | 52 min. Screened by arrangement with director Goran Radovanovic, with funding from the City of New Haven Peace Commission.
On the day before festivities that will celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, an old man repairs an ancient motorcycle; a young dentist tries to find transport to patients waiting at a clinic on a remote mountain; a middle-aged couple hosts a telephone booth for villagers’ use in their modest house. But the celebrations change nothing, and the next day is pretty much the same. Bullhorns and the ideological slogans they blared out all day are both 52 years old... But the revolution continues...For how long? *Preceeded by short film, From Maids to Companeras (directed By Jean Weisman and Belkis Vega)

Your responses will be confidential and never identified with you, but will make a real difference in helping us address artists’ needs.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you would like to share this with friends in the arts, please do. However, it is very important that you forward it before you open it so the link to the survey will work for you and for your friends. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YHGYBFD

Fine Citizens of New Haven [and Beyond]:

With the economy teetering on the brink of another recession, a massive heat wave on the way, an epidemic of folks eating bath salts and, regrettably, a probable zombie invasion, we can all agree that what the world needs now more than ever —to lift us out of our global malaise— is a series of fast-paced, pithy and inspiring presentations about All The Cool Things Happening In & Around Our Community.

And so, a city turns its lonely eyes towards you, PechaKuchan.

That’s right, folks — the Elm City’s finest purveyor of Local-Awesomeness-In-Twenty-Second-Increments is back for Summer Edition on Wednesday, August 29th. But what would a PechaKucha New Haven event be without presenters? (Answer: a bunch of people awkwardly standing around at Bentara at 7:30 pm on 29 August, obviously).

That’s where you come in. Tell New Haven what you and yours are up to/ working on/ thinking of/ solving. Artists, entrepreneurs, hackers, nerds, poets, scientists, engineers, sandbox designers, city planners, rowing coaches, MFA candidates, cyclist authors —we want you there.

Come on out for Summer. More info here.
