Reintegrate Teams Announced

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven is proud to announce the Reintegrate teams of artists and scientists. These seven teams were chosen to receive $10,000 grants to complete projects over the next seven months. Teams were selected by an independent panel of artists and scientists.

Reintegrate Teams:

Williams + Williams: Place as Character
This team will bring together the worlds of geography and literature in creating an expandable database of places from scenes in literature. The data will then be analyzed to discover how authors create a “sense of place.”

Banach + Bliss: Cross-Discipline Learning Kits
This project will mix applied mathematics, education, and design to create educational tools that will be made available to the public at the project’s completion.

Demers + Coates + Calvo: Discovering the Higgs
Particle physics meets dance meets photography in this project that will translate the details of the Higgs boson discovery in a non-verbal way, specifically in photographs of dance. In doing this, they hope to also lend back to the science new ways of conceiving of the momentous discovery.

Slomba + Heidkamp: Sculpting the Census
This project will integrate geographic information science, sculpture and social engagement. They will be taking local census data and then make sculptures to visualize the information in a new, engaging way.

Liu + Smith + Skrtic + Gusberg + Haines + Yuh: Conversations on Body and Faith
The science of medicine mixes with the art of glass-making and photography for this project that aims to teach the public about the human body and to have them question the fragility of it, their faith in it, and the implications of disease with a series of installations.

Singleton + Jackson: Living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
This artist/scientist collaboration will result in a multi-media theatre-based performance on the subject of PTSD. Their aim is to entertain while remaining informative, drawing from personal accounts, psychiatry, and biology of the brain.

Grabel + Johnson + Willems: Science Choreography
This dance/cell biology/education team’s goal for Reintegrate is to build an interactive, multi-media performance piece, exploring stem cells and the ethical implications of stem cell research.

For more detailed descriptions of the projects, please visit Reintegratenewhaven.com/teams.

Reintegrate has been made possible with support from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of the Arts.

Open Studios Weekend, November 17-18, 2012, 10am - 4 pm.

What will YOU find on the Shoreline ArtsTrail? There is a lot to discover, so join us for the 11th annual Open Studios Weekend, November 17 and 18, 2012. In total, 47 artists from Branford, Guilford, and Madison are participating in this two-day event, presenting works in cut paper, engraving, fiber, found objects, glass, goldsmithing, jewelry, metal, paint, pastels, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, stained glass, and textiles.

For their support of this special event, we’d especially like to welcome our Community Sponsors: Friends & Company, Guilford Arts Center, Lenny’s Indian Head Inn, Tommy Sullivan’s, and the Wall Street Gallery.

This year, we’re also joined by seven Tourism Members, a collection of local businesses offering discounts and specials during Open Studios Weekend. They include: Friends and Company, Lenny's, Linden Point House, R.J. Julia Booksellers, HOME, The Kelsey House, The Tidewater Inn, Tommy Sullivan's, and the Wall Street Gallery. Plus, be sure to watch for a special Shoreline ArtsTrail Kick-Off event, hosted by Friends & Company sometime in October!

Another unique feature of this year’s Open Studios Weekend is the increased number of collaborative efforts. Scattered throughout the ArtsTrail, you’ll meet up with a number of artists sharing creative space for the weekend, including at Chroma Gallery, Clay Bodies Pottery Studio, Guilford Art Center, Luckey & Merrill Studio, Martha Link Walsh Gallery, Metalicious Studio, The Glass Hut, and The Potere.

During Open Studios Weekend, the distinctive yellow “Open Studio” signs will point you to all of these artists and studios. For specific locations and more information about events, discount offers and participating artists, pick up a copy of the Shoreline ArtsTrail map, available in libraries, town halls and visitors’ centers in Branford, Guilford and Madison, as well as at the Guilford Art Center and the various studios. The 38th annual Crowell Concert Series presented by Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and Music Department continues with a performance by the group Dither, an electric guitar quartet, on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 8pm in Crowell Concert Hall located at 50 Wyllys Avenue on the Wesleyan campus in Middletown.

Dither is a New York based electric guitar quartet dedicated to an eclectic mix of experimental repertoire, which spans composed music, improvisation, and electronic manipulation. Formed in 2007, the quartet has performed in the United States and abroad, presenting new commissions, original compositions, improvisations, multimedia works, and large guitar ensemble pieces. With sounds ranging from clean pop textures to heavily processed noise, from tight rhythmic unity to cacophonous sound mass, all of Dither’s music embraces the beautiful, engulfing, and often gloriously loud sound of electric guitars. The current members of the quartet are Taylor Levine, Joshua Lopes, James Moore and Gyan Riley.

Tickets for the performance by Dither are $22 for the general public; $18 for senior citizens, Wesleyan faculty/staff, and non-Wesleyan students; and $6 for Wesleyan students. Milksop: Unsung
What is “psycho-folk?” The best way to find out is to come to the BEST VIDEO PERFORMANCE SPACE this Thursday, Nov. 15, to see and hear New Haven band Milksop: Unsung. Members of the group are Dan Carrano (mandolin, acoustic guitar), T.J. Jackson (acoustic guitar, banjo), Gary Velush (upright bass) and Mike Paolucci (percussion). With that instrumentation, it should be no surprise that the band’s roots are in bluegrass and Americana. But they put their own 21st-cemtury twisted twist on those forms. Suggested cover donation for this show is $5.

Wed., Nov. 21, 8pm
Sambeleza featuring Jeff Fuller & Isabella Mendes

"The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy"
Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and Theater Department present the world premiere of "The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy", a new work written and directed by Rinde Eckert during his residency at Wesleyan as Visiting Artist in Theater and Creative Campus Fellow.

The four performances—on Thursday, November 15 and Friday, November 16 at 8pm, and Saturday, November 17 at 2pm and 8pm in the CFA Theater, located at 271 Washington Terrace on the Wesleyan campus in Middletown—will feature Mr. Eckert as well as Wesleyan Theater students.

“The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy” is about a man raised by wolves who finds himself toward the end of his life at the top of the food chain. Powerful and erudite, a "wild child" who has assimilated, he longs for a return to the wildness of the wolf he was—but how does one recover one's original, less conditioned or acculturated self? What is gained in the effort? What is lost in translation?

Admission for the performances of "The Last Days of the Old Wild Boy" is $8 for the general public; $5 for senior citizens, Wesleyan faculty/staff, and non-Wesleyan students; and $4 for Wesleyan students. Tickets are available online at http://www.wesleyan.edu/cfa, by phone at (860) 685-3355, or in person at the Wesleyan University Box Office, located in the Usdan University Center, 45 Wyllys Avenue, Middletown. Tickets may also be purchased at the door beginning one hour prior to the performance, subject to availability.
